HopeKids Volunteer Training

Tools used in Development: Lectora, Canva, Audacity

Time in Development: About 3 weeks

Client: HopeKids Kansas City (Shared with Permission)

My role: Instructional designer, developer, graphic designer, voiceover creator

Context: This course is the last of a three part series to train new volunteers and fill knowledge gaps for current volunteers.  The existing volunteer training system, or lack thereof, involved a short one-on-one meeting with a HopeKids staff member to go over the outdated Volunteer Handbook, leaving room for inconsistencies and ambiguities.

Challenge: The quick, informal nature of the existing training caused volunteers to be unsure or unaware of the expectations of their role, specifically what do do after a hosted event, leaving vital tasks incomplete.  Staff members at the non-profit, who already have a full workload, would then have to do extra leg-work to make sure the necessary tasks were complete in order to ensure event quality and customer satisfaction, and secure funding.  As an added challenge, the volunteers have no unified work place or schedule, and are giving service in their extra time.

Solution: I designed and developed an eLearning course that would be completed asynchronously, being mindful of the demands on their time. This allows the content to reach all volunteers in a comprehensive, uniform way.  Also, the course is customizable, allowing learners to opt in or out of certain lessons that are relevant to their needs. The eLearning provides opportunities for volunteers to interact with real-life scenarios, and provides feedback to reinforce the expectations of them and the impact of their work.

Outcome: The implementation of this course and accompanying job aid increased reporting reliability from 20% to 95% within two months.
